Over several decades, the Boschung fixed automated spray technology (FAST) has proved its worth as stationary winter maintenance equipment. Many years of experience and ongoing development have resulted in a systemic solution which operates safely and ecologically.

The spraying heads are embedded into the road surface and the valve units with all the active elements are installed by the roadside.

The de-icing agent is sprayed onto the road surface through spray discs in the road surface or through spray nozzles at the side of the road.

In cost-benefit analyses, the FAST achieves a very high cost-effectiveness factor.

Technical Description

The FAST installation consists of valve units and patented spray discs in the road surface; the spray discs are protected against heavy weights and the abrasion caused by snowploughs or vehicle tyres. By applying the necessary pressure, the de-icing agent is regularly distributed onto the road surface. The spraying width and spraying area can be adapted to suit the prevailing road conditions.

The patented valve unit incorporates the solenoid valves, the valve control card and the accumulator tank. This tank contains sufficient de-icing agent, under pressure, for one spraying cycle. In this way, the size of the feed lines is kept to a minimum and they are designed to extend the length of the spraying system to more than 1,000 meters.

In addition to the pump, the pump station incorporates the control unit and the storage tank for the de-icing agent.

In the event of an ice hazard, the spraying process can be activated in combination with an ice early warning system. With various spraying programs or multiple spraying operations, the system can be perfectly adapted to suit the prevailing conditions.

Spray Installation

The FAST system is installed invisibly and indestructibly under the road surface. The valve units, with all active elements, are fitted at the side of the road. On the road surface passive elements are installed such as spray disks, which when the road surface is renewed can be replaced cost-effectively.

Throughout many winters, the FAST system has proved itself in stationary winter service. Many years of experience and continuous development have produced a systematic solution which is safe and environmentally friendly.

In cost/use analyses, the FAST system achieves a very high economic viability score.

Ice forms when it is raining and the surface of the road is colder than 0°C or rain that has been cooled below this temperature.

If precipitation which will lead to ice is detected, then anti-icing fluid is sprayed immediately.

Black ice

Black ice forms when damp areas (melted water, etc.) freeze as the temperature drops.

Shortly before the temperature reaches freezing, damp areas are treated preventively with minimum quantities of de-icer.


moist warm air or mist

Hoarfrost forms if the road freezes over with very fine frost particles (above all in the long clear winter nights).

As soon as hoarfrost conditions are measured, the road surface is sprayed.

Packed snow


Fallen snow is compacted by traffic and forms an icy surface.

When snow starts to fall, a small quantity of anti-icing fluid sprayed on the road surface, which prevents the ice bonding with the surface and thus optimises clearing of the road surface with snowploughs and brushes.

Pump Station

Pump Station

The Pump station consists of a storage tank for the de-icing agent, a pump and an electronic control unit. The unit is flexibly mounted and can be adapted to suit any local conditions.


The vertical stainless steel rotary pump pressurizes any liquid anti-icing with a maximum operating pressure of 16 bar.

Pressure Monitor

The pressure monitor constantly checks the pressure in the spray circuit. When the system is inactive, it is checked hourly or against programmable cycles.

Control Unit

The FAST control unit monitors and controls the entire system:

  • Solenoid valve controller in the valve units
  • Monitoring the hydraulic circuit (pump control, pressure and flow rate)
  • Monitoring the electrical circuit (short or open circuits)
  • automatic refilling of the tank
  • Release of spray programs manually, by PC or by GFS alarms

Flow Meter

The flow meter is used to compare a calculated value with the actual value of the amount of anti-icing used during a spray program. This allows any leaking or defective points in the circuit to be detected and immediate measures taken.

Tank monitoring

The anti-icing fluid tank is fitted with a float and an ultrasound sensor. The float switches the pump off if the level falls below the minimum. The ultrasound sensor displays the current level as a percentage on the PC in the control center. It also provides an alarm if the content of the tank is too low and gives an acoustic and visual alarm when the maximum level is reached during filling.

Storage Tank

The size of the storage tank is determined on the basis of the number of spray nozzles and the rate of flow of the de-icing agent.
